Taraf de Akácfa is a Budapest based group that performs a unique interpretation of Romanian, Transylvanian and Balkan folk music. The group was formed by travelling street musicians who met in Hungary. Over the years, the members traveled to the origins of the music they are passionate about. They have had the opportunity to learn from some of the finest Roma musicians, such as Taraf de Haïdouks and Marcel Ramba. They mix their knowledge and different musical backgrounds to blend traditional styles with new ideas and arrangements. Their repertoire ranges from danceable Macedonian cočeks and complex odd-time Bulgarian melodies to Romanian Gypsy horas and heart-wrenching Transylvanian songs.
The bands formation includes: Johannes Olsson (accordion), Lulu de la Rue (violin),
Valentin Desmarais (double bass), Isaac Misri (guitar), Ferenc Zimber (cimbalom).
La Pêche
Born out of a weekly residency in 2013/14 at the legendary Revolution Café in San Francisco, La Pêche quickly grew to become one of the major players on the Bay Area Balkan scene. Led by French-American saxophonist and composer Paul Bertin, the band features Eastman graduate Morgan Nilsen (La Misa Negra, Mc Rai, and a student of David Krakauer), Ofir Uziel (Inspector Gadje), Izzy Wise (LoCura, Istanbul Connection) and Jonathan Selin (Tiger Honey Pot).
During 2014, the band composed, performed and recorded a full Soundtrack to the French 1904 movie "Voyage à traverse l'impossible" in a close collaboration with Emmy winning composer Dan Cantrell.
In a recent tour through the Balkans, the group had the chance to perform throughout Turkey and Bulgaria and was even aired on Bulgarian National Radio.
To further deepen their understanding of the music, they organized a series of lessons and developed close ties with local masters such as Albanian Clarinetist Josif Shukallari, Romanian saxophonist Mircea Bunea and Hungarian Saxophonist Peter Bede.
La Pêche is an unique voice in the bay area music scene, as the only band to focus on the very upbeat and melodically rich Romanian music. Yet their extensive knowledge of musics from the Balkans, Turkey and the Jewish tradition, allied with a strong artistic sense of composition make them one of the most versatile group available today; be it at a concert, wedding party or on a street corner in the mission district, their performances are always an irresistible call to dance, and a dazzling feast for the ears !
