A words-and-music celebration hosted by the independent bookstore coalition working to preserve and serve the longstanding community and creative interests of the historic Latino Cultural District. Adobe Books, Alley Cat Books, Dog Eared Books, and Modern Times Bookstore Collective join to honor the authors, poets, musicians, and activists who make their culturally diverse spaces hum.

Kate Akimbo has been opening and running book shops in San Francisco for the past 30 years:Phoenix Books (Noe Valley 1985-2013), Red Hill/Badger Books, (Bernal Heights 2004-2013), and currently Alley Cat Books and Dog Eared Books in the Mission and Dog Eared Books on Castro dogearedbooks.com alleycatbookshop.com. Ian Brennan, a Grammy-winning record producer (Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Bill Frisell), travels the globe in search of music. Since 1993, he has lectured internationally over one hundred times a year regarding violence prevention and is the author of two books on the subject, Anger Antidotes and Hate-less. A native of San Francisco, he is currently based in northern Italy. His latest book is How Music Dies: Field Recording And the Battle for Democracy in the Arts (Allworth, 2016).
MK Chavez is a writer and a champion of public health and social justice. She is the author of Virgin Eyes, Mothermorphosis, Dear Animal, (Nomadic Press) will be released in October 2016. Chavez is co-founder and curator of the reading series Lyrics & Dirges, and the co-director of the Berkeley Poetry Festival. She has been a fellow at VONA, Squaw Valley Writers Workshop, and Antioch Writers Workshop.
Freddy Gutierrez: Vato de aquellos, MFA, Oakland based Writer, Teaching Artist, and Cultural Worker. Freddy inspires and nurtures writers to move from the page to the stage and the street. Freddy has taught with Youth Speaks, Chapter 510, and the Oakland Public Library. He facilitates writing and performance arts spaces with men and youth who are policed, imprisoned, and marginalized by the prison-industrial complex.
Victor Krummenacher is a musician and founding member of the alternative rock band Camper Van Beethoven. He helped form the bands Monks of Doom, Camper Van Chadbourne, McCabe & Mrs. Miller and has pursued a solo career as a singer-songwriter. He also played bass with Cracker for several years. Krummenacher was Art Director of the San Francisco Bay Guardian for six years and is currently the Managing Art Director for Wired.
Alejandro Murguía is the author of Southern Front and This War Called Love (both winners of the American Book Award). His nonfiction book The Medicine of Memory highlights the Mission District in the 1970s during the Nicaraguan Solidarity movement. He is a founding member and the first director of the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts.
Natasha Muse is like the C3P0 of San Francisco comedy: a bunch of small bears once mistook her for a golden god but in reality she’s a bumbling robot (as well as a mom, a transsexual, and a firm agnostic). The SF Weekly once declared her a “Comedian to Watch” in 2014, and in 2016 they upgraded her to an “Artist to Watch.” Natasha features at the SF Punchline and Cobb’s Comedy Club.
