| This month, Writers With Drinks features our feminist hero Anita Sarkeesian, along with TWO heroic poets: Sam Sax and Cassandra Dallett! Plus superstar science communicator Rose Eveleth, writer/producer Christine No, and artist/writer Indira Allegra. Also featuring an amazing guest host, Elena Rose! When: Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, doors open 6:30 PM Who: Sam Sax, Christine No, Indira Allegra, Rose Eveleth, Cassandra Dallett, and guest host Elena Rose! How much: $5 to $20, all proceeds benefit the Center for Sex & Culture  Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning media critic and the host of Feminist Frequency Radio, a weekly podcast that focuses on deconstructing the stereotypes and tropes associated with women in popular culture. Because of her work with Feminist Frequency she was once named “pop culture’s most valuable critic” by Rolling Stone. Her new book, co-written with Ebony Adams is called History vs Women: The Defiant Lives That THEY Don't Want You To Know. And because she does too many things at once, she is also organizing immersive, interactive fine dining experiences using emerging technologies, mixed reality, and really delicious food.  Rose Eveleth is a writer and producer based in Berkeley who explores how humans tangle with science and technology. She’s the creator and host Flash Forward, a podcast about possible (and not so possible) futures, and has covered everything from fake tumbleweed farms to million dollar baccarat heists.  Indira Allegra works with tension as creative material to investigate themes of haunting and memorial. She is active in a range of fields including writing, performance, sculpture and installation. Her commissions include performances for SFMOMA, de Young Museum, The Wattis Institute and SFJAZZ Poetry Festival. Allegra’s work has been featured on BBC Radio 4, KQED, Art Journal and Surface Design Magazine. Her writing has been anthologized in Sovereign Erotics: A Collection of Two Spirit Literature, Red Indian Road West: Native American Poetry from California, Dear Sister: Letters from Survivors of Sexual Violence and Writing the Walls Down: A Convergence of LGBTQ Voices. She has contributed works to Foglifter Magazine, Cream City Review, CANAL, HYSTERIA Magazine, make/shift Magazine, and Yellow Medicine Review: A Journal of Indigenous Literature, Art and Thought among others. Allegra's work has received support from the Jackson Literary Award, Mike Kelley Artist Project Grant, MAP Fund, Queer Cultural Center and Oakland Individual Artist Grant. She is currently an Artist in Residence at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco.  About Writers With Drinks: Writers With Drinks has won numerous "Best ofs" from local newspapers, and has been mentioned in 7x7, Spin Magazine and one of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City novels. The spoken word "variety show" mixes genres to raise money for local causes. The award-winning show includes poetry, stand-up comedy, science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, literary fiction, erotica, memoir, zines and blogs in a freewheeling format |  About the readers/performers: sam sax is a queer, jewish, poet, & educator. He's the author of Madness (Penguin, 2017) winner of The National Poetry Series and ‘Bury It’ (Wesleyan University Press, 2018) winner of the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. He’s received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Lambda Literary, & the MacDowell Colony. He’s the two-time Bay Area Grand Slam Champion, author of four chapbooks & winner of the Gulf Coast Prize, The Iowa Review Award, & American Literary Award. His poems have appeared in BuzzFeed, The New York Times, The Nation, Poetry Magazine + other journals. He’s the poetry editor at BOAAT Press & will be a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University this Fall.  Cassandra Dallett is out here trying to function. She has been published online and in many print magazines. Cassandra reads often around the San Francisco Bay Area, she hosts the monthly writing workshop OnTwoSix, and the quarterly reading series Moon Drop Productions. Her first full-length book of poetry Wet Reckless (Manic D Press) was released in 2014. In 2015, she authored five chapbooks one of them, On Sunday, A Finch (Nomadic Press) was nominated for a California Book Award, 2018 brought the release of a full-length collection Collapse also on (Nomadic Press).  Christine No is a writer/filmmaker who has shown work at the Sundance Film Festival and in publications including: The Rumpus, sPARKLE+bLINK, Columbia Journal, Atlas And Alice, Apogee, The Brooklyn Quarterly and various anthologies. She is a cohort of the Kearny Street Workshop Interdisciplinary Writers Lab, a VONA/Voices Fellow, a Pushcart Prize Nominee, Best of The Net 2017 Nominee, and placed First in Poetry in the 2016 Litquake Writing Contest. She believes in radical kindness, that magic exists, and that “the only way out is through”. She’s also a total dork and looks way better on paper. She lives in Oakland with her ride-or-die pit bull/bae, Brandeh.  SPECIAL GUEST HOST: Elena Rose rode stories out of rural Oregon and never looked back. A sweet-talking monster at the microphone, she has performed with the Fresh Meat Festival, Queer Rebels, Mangos With Chili, Girl Talk, and many others, and tours nationwide as a speaker and educator. Her political, theological, and creative writing has been featured everywhere from bathroom mirrors to protest marches, most recently in the acclaimed Queer and Trans Artists of Color, Vol. 2, which she co-edited with Nia King, and she was a founding member of the Speak! Radical Women of Color Media Collective. As an ordained minister and community organizer, Elena stays busy building love for people at the edges everywhere, and draws her hope from the strangeness of the world.  |
