About the readers/performers:

Gayle Brandeis is the author, most recently, of the memoir The Art of Misdiagnosis: Surviving My Mother’s Suicide, and the poetry collection The Selfless Bliss of the Body. Her other books include Fruitflesh: Seeds of Inspiration for Women Who Write, and the novels The Book of Dead Birds, which won the Bellwether Prize for Fiction of Social Engagement, Self Storage, Delta Girls, and My Life with the Lincolns, which received a Silver Nautilus Book Award and was chosen as a state-wide read in Wisconsin. Her poetry, essays, and short fiction have been widely published in places such as The Washington Post, The Rumpus, and Salon, and have received numerous honors, including a Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Award and a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2016. She teaches at Sierra Nevada College and Antioch University Los Angeles.

Lisa Margonelli is the author of Underbug: A Tale of Termites and Technology and the national bestseller Oil On the Brain: Petroleum’s Long Strange Trip to Your Tank. She’s written for the Atlantic, Wired, Scientific American, and elsewhere and is the deputy editor of Zocalo Public Square, an ASU magazine of ideas. Her first book was awarded the Northern California Book Award in Non-Fiction, and she has received fellowships from the Breadloaf Writers Conference, the New America Foundation, the Mesa Refuge and the Sundance Institute. After living in the Bay Area for 20 years, she now lives in Maine.

​Laleh Khadivi was born in Esfahan, Iran. Her debut novel, The Age of Orphans, received the Whiting Award for Fiction, the Barnes and Nobles Discover New Writers Award and an Emory Fiction Fellowship. Her debut documentary film 900 WOMEN aired on A&E and premiered at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival. She has worked as director, producer and cinematographer of documentary films since 1999. Her fiction and non-fiction can be found in The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, VQR, The Sun and other publications. She is the recipient of a 2016 National Endowment for the Arts Grant and a 2016 Pushcart Prize for her story Wanderlust. She lives in Northern California.

David Brothers is a writer, editor, and podcaster who was born in Georgia and lives in Oakland. You probably know him from his time working as Branding Manager at Image Comics, editing manga at Viz Media, or getting in trouble on Twitter because his jokes are so funny that they loop back around to being anti-humor. You can find him sitting by the dock of the bay, watching time roll away.

 latest novel is The City in the Middle of the Night. She's also the author of All the Birds in the Sky, which won the Nebula, Crawford and Locus awards, and Choir Boy, which won a Lambda Literary Award. Plus a novella called Rock Manning Goes For Broke and a short story collection called Six Months, Three Days, Five Others. Her story "Six Months, Three Days" won a Hugo Award, and her story "Don't Press Charges And I Won't Sue" won a Theodore Sturgeon Award. Charlie Jane also organizes the monthly Writers With Drinks reading series, and co-hosts the podcast Our Opinions Are Correct with Annalee Newitz.
