(Jackie Shane is truly one of the great unsung soul singers of the 1960s. As a transgender performer in the American South, she escaped violence and discrimination, gaining regional stardom in Toronto, Canada. After four decades in musical obscurity, bits and pieces of her remarkable story are only now becoming known. Some highlights: she worked in a carnival, was befriended by Little Richard and Joe Tex, escaped kidnapping by a mafioso crime boss, played drums on Lowell Fulson's "Tramp" and later turned down an offer to join Funkadelic.)
