LOOSE JOINTS! w/ DJs Centipede, Damon Bell, & Thom Thump ~ Soul, Disco, Afrobeat, Hip-Hop, more! $5 ~ 10:00 pm - 2:00 am

Funky, sweaty and not very sober, the Make-Out Room’s funk-centric DJ showcase “Loose Joints” cuts loose again this weekend with resident DJ Tom Thump, DJ Centipede, Damon Bell and a special guest from Detroit, the eclectic DJ BMG.

Situated in the funky core of the Mission district in the raucous Friday evening time slot, the three-years-running weekly party inspires some crazy good times, says Mission resident Tom Thump: “The place is so weird. It’s got decor like nowhere else. It’s funky in just the right way.”

The Make-Out Room is known for strong drinks, a big dance floor, an improving sound system and a stage people tend to get up on.

“We see stripper types bumping and grinding up there. One time this really wasted guy kept lifting up his shirt and poking his belly fat. It’s like, ‘What are you doing?’ but people seemed to enjoy it.”

“According to the door guy, sometimes it’s not just making out going on,” Thump says, adding that he’s pleased his playing inspires such activity.

Thump, a Detroit native who worked in radio in Ann Arbor, moved to San Francisco 17 years ago.

The Urb “Next 100” DJ has toured the world, playing alongside the likes of Gilles Peterson and George Clinton.

He started “Loose Joints” with house producer-DJ Bell and 45-turntablist DJ Centipede (aka Mophono) in 2009 as an all-vinyl funk, Afrobeat, Latin, disco and hip-hop night.

Bell generally spins boogie, disco and funk, while Centipede cuts up vintage 45s and Thump focuses on Latin, Afrobeat and O.G. Funk, the Slits, Liquid Liquid and the Phenomenal Handclap Band. “We do challenge the audience, there’s no doubt about it,” he says.

“Loose Joints” offers a counterpoint to numerous house nights thumping monotonously across The City, he said.

“It’s the one place we don’t really go,” he says.

A stew of Mission hipsters, weekend warriors and good old San Francisco freaks, attendance has been strong from the beginning and remains so, Thump says. “It’s just really been consistently good. I’ve done a lot of parties and think this is my favorite thing I’ve ever done.

“Come down, hit the dance floor and meet some cool people as well.”
